January 2009
Attended New Year's Eve dinner at River House.  This is a fun, festive event with lots of regular customers from throughout the year.  Gayle (owner) was in a lovely gown and mingled with all the guests.  A band played music before and after dinner.  The staff (led by Sherman) was in formal attire.  The meal was 8 courses starting with passed hors d'oeuvre and concluding with dessert and a champagne toast.

December 2008
I have been to River House 7 times over the past 3 years.  They consistently deliver great food and service.  River House is a bed and breakfast in the northeastern-most corner of North Carolina (very near Jefferson & 45 minutes from Boone for locals, 2.5 hours from Charlotte for the less local).  The restaurant is open for guest of the bed and breakfast as well as non-guest patrons.  The restaurant is in the main house facing a sleepy bend in the New River.  The bar and restaurant seating is cozy and encourages mingling with other patrons.  The staff is very friendly and laid back while still focused on service.

The wine and bar selections are very good.  The food is excellent.  A typical menu is a la carte and includes 3-4 first course selections, 3-4 entree choices and 2-3 dessert options.  I have never been disappointed with meal there.  They have also been very accommodating to alterations to the selections as well as to special requests.

For most of the year the restaurant is open Wednesday-Sunday but it's typically closed January through Easter.  It's always good to call for a reservation just to check hours and to ensure seating (as they have guest authors, musicians and such visit often and the place can fill up fast).

My two recommendations: (1) get a reservation and arrive 30-45 minutes early and enjoy a chat with the maitre d' while order you wine/cocktail then take a stroll around the grounds - it's gorgeous and comfortable outside late April through early October - then have a second drink on the porch where you can peruse then menu and order before being seated for your meal.  (2) attend a "Salon Sunday" event (look these up online - lazy Sunday afternoons with special guests and informal "salon" inspired atmosphere).
